Small and
medium enterprises (SMEs) comprise 99.9% of all European businesses. Such SMEs
account for 90% of companies within the publishing sector. Clearly SMEs are
pivotal components of the European economy. The importance of SMEs within the
publishing sector across Europe has been recognised by political and economical
figures.
Government backed and private funding initiatives are being made
available to ensure that small and medium enterprises are able to maintain
their level of creativity and continue to be the backbone of innovation within
the European economy as a whole, but specifically within the publishing sector.
“We recognise that by improving the incentives for companies to innovate they
will continue to create life-changing products to drive further innovation and
growth.” (Cable, 2011)
Evidently with small and medium businesses comprising such a dominant
section of European economy, particularly the publishing sector, helping to
keep them growing is the key to current media innovation.
