Marketing is a crucial element of any publishing business and like everything that requires money should be well-planned. Hence, there is a need for the analysis of the market; research what is already out there. We need to assess the situation to find out if there is a niche for our product. It has to be of some value for a reader/customer. If we can’t offer a valuable proposition we will not achieve our goals. People often make a crucial mistake and set up objectives before checking what is available within the market they are aiming for. Furthermore, the marketing plan should be suitable for the type of business; a small independent publisher would not have enough resources to invest a fortune in a marketing campaign of one book. It is essential to understand strengths and weaknesses of the prospective project in order to maximize its potential. Sometimes a publisher should compromise or adjust to the existing situation i.e. if we can’t afford to prepare a beneficial plan that will sell our product abroad we can invest more into a home market. We should always think about having several options to create a successful business.
