It's not really used by large publishers, as print on demand isn't as cost effective as offset printing for such large runs as the big publishers use.
However, some publishers have used it in a different way. Life magazine has used it for republishing vintage issues, so that they can be bought only when in demand, which is particularly good for them, as it costs them nothing as the content has already been produced.
I've not heard of this, how popular is it with Publishers?
